Sisters,
This is a busy time as school winds down and vacation time is approaching. Lots of activities are coming up soon. Thank you for all the work you do in Primary and Young Women and the library. We appreciate the service you give to the families of the ward.
Sunday's lesson was Obedience, from the Gospel Principles manual, given by Sharon Pringle. With a brightly decorated table with a food storage theme, Sister Pringle, used scriptures and quotes from General Authorities, personal experiences and pioneer stories to illustrate the importance of the foundation principle of obedience, which is the first law of heaven.
We show our love for the Lord and Our Heavenly Father by obedience to the commandments they have given us. We need to obey because we love them and not because we fear punishment if we fail to obey. The commandments are given for our good and protection, and even when we cannot yet understand the reason for a commandment, we can be sure that it is designed for our good.
When we are given a commandment, the way will always be prepared for us to accomplish that thing, if we seek the Lord's help. All the commandments are important and should be obeyed, for this earthly existence is a test of our willingness to be obedient in all things. Christ is our perfect example of obedience, for He obeyed His Father in all things. It was the only way that He could make salvation possible for all of us. Consequences come from both obedience and disobedience.
Because the kingdom of heaven is governed by law, any blessing that we receive is the consequence of our obedience to that law upon which that blessing is predicated. Through our obedience and diligence we can gain the knowledge and worthiness to grow spiritually and gain eternal life. Disobedience cannot result in the blessings that we need for exaltation. "If you keep my commandments and endure to the end you shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God." D&C 14:7
The Lord has told us that obedience includes following the counsel of our Prophet and other designated leaders, for He has said, "...whether by mine own voice, or by the voice of my servants, it is the same." D&C1:38
Next week Gospel Principles Chapters 36 & 37 will be given by Traci Cline.
