The Relief Society Lesson for this week was given by Traci Cline from Chapter 29 of the Gospel Principles Book The Lord's Law of Health.
One of the great blessings of mortality is the physical body that we each receive, so necessary for further progression toward eternal life, and such an integral part of earthly existence. These are holy bodies, and so important that the Lord calls them temples of God. We are charged to care for them, keeping them healthy and clean, that we are worthy to have the Holy Ghost as our companion.
Many of the temptations of this life involve our physical bodies, and the way we treat them and the things we put into them. We have been given a law of health by the Lord containing important information about how we can keep these bodies healthy and pure and worthy of having the Spirit. It is Section 89 of the Doctrine and Covenants and in it the Lord has given us a principle with promise, a guideline for dealing with the evils and designs that will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days.
It warns against substances harmful to the body, both physically and spiritually, and which should be avoided, such as wine and alcohol, hot drinks and tobacco in all forms. As a principle it should be a guideline also for substances that are not mentioned specifically, but are equally harmful such as energy drinks, drugs of any kind that are not prescribed for specific conditions, and anything that becomes addictive and detracts from the well being of this mortal body or spirit.
It goes on to recommend those foods that are healthful to the body, placed here by Heavenly Father for our use. It is the promise that comes with the principle that contains the heart of the Lord's Law of Health. It does not promise perfect health, freedom from disease or debilitating conditions to this mortal body, but rather by obedience to the commandments of this law we are promised wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures.
We will be able to run and not be weary and walk and not faint, which perhaps is an assurance that we will be able to endure to the end whatever adversities come to us in this earthly testing place. The destroying angels will pass by us as they did the Children of Israel, and not slay them. and since all things are spiritual, this reassures us that whatever many happen to this mortal body, if we are obedient to the commandments, including the laws of health, we will be saved from spiritual death here by being able to enjoy the Spirit, and can look forward to eternal life in the world to come.
