The lesson for the week was chapter 28 of the Gospel Principles book on Service. It was given by Sharon Pringle and was a very timely topic in this anniversary time for the Relief Society. The lesson begins be defining service and saying that there are many ways to serve, by helping others economically, socially, physically and spiritually. Small acts of service are just as meaningful as large ones when done with love. Serving others is participating in God's work here on earth for He often uses us to meet the needs of others. We gain blessings from serving others. Our ability to love increases as we serve and we become less selfish. As we think of the problems of others, our own problems seem less daunting. We are becoming refined and more fit for the kingdom of God and eternal life through our loving service.
Service increases spirituality in many ways:
~Service helps us establish true values and priorities
~Service helps us establish a righteous tradition for our families
~Service helps us overcome selfishness and sin.
~Service helps to recompense for sin.
~Service helps us generate love and appreciation.
~Service shows our gratitude to the Savior.
~Service channels our desires and energies into righteous activity.
~Service helps us to cleanse ourselves and become purified and sanctified.
~Charitable service helps us do as the Savior did.
~Service helps us to get to know the Savior.
Sister Pringle had Sister Hart share how loving service had touched the lives of a family from our ward during and after the loss of the father. Sister Churchill then shared how she has been able to touch many lives for good among children she has taught who do not have the advantage of a stable family and the foundation of the gospel.
In the spirit of Relief Society seek for opportunities to serve as the Spirit guides you and find ways to help your families learn that important principle, too.
Have a great week!
