Sunday's lesson was Chapter 23 of the Gospel Principles book entitled The Sacrament.
How appropriate that this holy week of Christmas we should turn our thoughts to the holy priesthood ordinance, instituted by the Lord Himself to help us remember the Atonement which was the centerpiece of His mission here on earth. This ordinance allows us to renew, each week, the covenants we made at baptism, and to repent and be once more clean as we were on the day of our baptism.
Shari Carnahan, substituting for Traci Cline, told how the Lord taught His Apostles to partake of the bread in remembrance of His flesh and the wine in remembrance of His blood which was shed for us. As an ordinance of the gospel, the sacrament must be administered by those holding the necessary priesthood authority. Young holders of the Aaronic Priesthood or holders of the Melchizedek priesthood, bless and pass the emblems of the Lord's sacrifice to members of the Church who have met together for this very purpose and to be taught and edified by one another. This ordinance is performed very simply and reverently.
As partakers of the sacrament, we are renewing covenants that we have made with the Lord. We are reminded that we have taken upon ourselves the Lord's name, thus being willing to be identified with His Church and His people. We recommit to serve Him by serving our fellowman. We are promising to seek to obey all of the commandments that have been given for our protection and learning, and to repent promptly when we fall short. Thus we are demonstrating our faith in Him and His atonement and the ability that He has to forgive sins of the truly repentant. In return, He is promising that we will always have His Spirit to be with us. (Ensign article notes: HERE)
When we come to the sacrament spiritually prepared, we are then worthy to gain a remission of our sins and be renewed in our faith and spiritual strength. We do not need to be perfect to partake of the sacrament, but we must have the spirit of repentance and humility and teachability, purity of heart if we will receive the promised blessings of the Lord.
Have a joyous Christmas with your families and friends, and remember what it is that brings the true joy of the season. Remember also the birthday of the Prophet Joseph Smith this week. Refer to the list of gifts (compiled by President Hunter) that we can give at this and any season, to give as the Savior gave. It is on the card that was given out today. Remember that a gift of self is a holy gift, for it is the kind of gift that He always gave.
Our love and good wishes are with you.
