A Christmas Story about the Provo Tabernacle by By Bill Freeze

As some of you may know the 125 year old historic Provo LDS Tabernacle was destroyed by fire this weekend in Provo, Utah. Cause is unknown, but most likely some kind of electrical issue. This building has been used by the LDS Church for local meetings, area conferences, special concerts, funerals, civic gatherings and community programs…plus many other uses. It was the grand old dame of our city and holds many special memories.

My brother-in-law, Battalion Chief, Roger Gourley, was one of the first on the scene at the Provo Tabernacle Friday morning at 2:30 AM. He directed four firehouses in fighting and containing the fire. The fire was eventually put out at 3:00 PM Saturday afternoon. The inner shell is a total loss and it will be determined in the coming days if the exterior walls will be safe enough to rebuild around.

There was a special Christmas program planned for Friday night with approximately 200 singers involved. The building had close to a million dollars of TV and electronic equipment in place for the program….all of that was lost. The concert was moved to another venue for Friday and Saturday and another community concert will be held tonight at Utah Valley University. No one was in the building during the fire and none of the firefighters were injured during their work.

For most viewing the interior it was a total loss…and then yesterday a fireman removed one of the many pieces of art work in the building…it is the building’s only survivor…a picture of Jesus Christ. The fire had seared the picture all around the frame and most of the picture…except the figure of our Lord and redeemer….he somehow survived.

Isn’t that really the message of our Christmas season? When we are downtrodden, heartbroken, sick, poor, miserable…when all seems lost…that little child of Bethlehem that came into the world over 2,000 years ago is still with us. His message, mission and life are eternal and when the flames of death attack us he survives and saves not only himself, but all of mankind.

Merry Christmas to all of you. The best is yet to come!
