Sunday's lesson The Church of Jesus Christ Today was given by Heidi Jo Mafi, substituting for Sharon Pringle. Sister Mafi asked us think about how the restoration of the gospel has influenced the way we think about and deal with many of the common occurrences of life such as trials and relationships and challenges. In general it seemed that knowledge of the gospel as it has been restored tends to give a different perspective to all of life, one that is more grounded and sure because of the things that we can learn through the restoration of the the gospel and the knowledge that accompanied it.
We are all familiar with the circumstances that occurred after the death of the apostles and the loss of the authority necessary to carry on the Lord's church. The Great Apostasy led to a long period of spiritual darkness, a famine of hearing the word of the Lord. The Lord promised that the time would come when His Church would be restored once more to the earth in the latter days. We are also familiar with the many events that laid the groundwork for that restoration to be accomplished. A young man, barely in his teens, was the foreordained prophet who would accomplish this "marvelous work and a wonder." Joseph Smith began his mission with a prayer and a question and received the first direct revelation from heaven since the apostasy began.
This was followed by sacred tutelage and the translation of sacred scripture prepared and especially preserved that it might come forth as the foundation of this great restoration. Then came the authority needed and long absent from the earth, to act in the name of God in bringing about the restoration of all things. Not only was the Church once more on the earth, but many sacred truths vital to our progress and exaltation, were part of the restoration of all things. The nature of the Father and the Son with tangible perfected bodies of flesh and bone, challenged the confusion of the world about the nature of deity. We learned that we existed in a premortal state before we came to earth. The necessary authority to administer the ordinances of the gospel was given to the prophet once more.
These are just a few of the important truths that had been lost from the earth for so long. The promise was given that the Church, priesthood authority, and sacred truths would never again be taken from the earth and the church would have the mission of taking the message of the restoration to every person. How marvelous and awe inspiring to be a part of this great Church and work in these latter days.
