The lesson for today was a presidency message presented by Merrily Seely. At the suggestion of Bp. Peterson she presented a lesson based on a conference talk given by Elder D. Todd Christofferson at the April 2009 Conference. Faith and spiritual strength will give the Lord's people a profound power which will be needed in the days ahead which are sure to be filled with hardships of diverse kinds. There will be a great need for strong Christians who through faith can make important things happen, and can defend the truth of Jesus Christ against moral relativism and militant atheism. God is the source of such moral and spiritual power and we gain access to that power through our covenants with Him. Through those covenants God binds Himself to sustain, sanctify, and exalt us in return for our commitment to serve Him and keep His commandments. Through our obedience we enjoy a continual flow of blessings promised by God. These blessings help us to meet the challenges of mortality better prepared deal with them as the Lord would have us deal. Covenants faithfully kept produce the faith necessary to persevere and to do all the things that are required of us by the Lord. We will be given the faith to face whatever trials come our way and be even further strengthened in our faith by doing so. The "power of godliness" comes to us through the Spirit as we make and keep sacred covenants including those that can be made only in the House of the Lord. God will keep His promises to us as we honor our covenants. He will make of us instruments for good in the His hands. Merrily closed her inspiring lesson with a quote by C.S. Lewis which underscores our need to be ever watchful and careful in keeping the covenants we have made:
Good and evil both increase at compound interest. That is why the little decisions you and I make every day are of such infinite importance., The smallest good act today is the capture of a strategic point from which,
a few months later, you may be able to go on to victories you never dreamed of . An apparently trivial indulgence in lust or anger today is the loss of a ridge or railway line or bridgehead from which the enemy may
launch an attack otherwise impossible.
Our covenants were designed to help us progress toward exaltation and to protect us from the influence of the Adversary who would claim us as his. Let us be ever mindful and grateful of those sacred covenants we have made and strive to do those little things that keep our obedience strong: Family Home Evening and Scripture Sturdy, Family and Couple Prayer, Service and Charity.
Next week Gospel Principles Chapter 13 The Priesthood will be given by Sharon Pringle.
Have a great week and hopefully some summer weather!
