Relief Society, which has the responsibility "to look after the spiritual welfare and salvation… of all the female members of the Church, was organized to provide 'relief of the poor, the destitute, the widow, and the orphan, and for the exercise of all benevolent purposes.' This includes 'relief of poverty, relief of illness, relief of doubt, relief of ignorance; relief of all that hinders the joy and progress of woman.' " - Julie B. Beck

Sunday Report

Dear Sisters,

Those of you who serve in other areas third hour are missed as we meet in Relief Society.  We are however very grateful for the work you are doing with the children and the youth or supporting the teaching through the library.  But we want you to always remember that you are members of this great organization patterned after the priesthood and standing as a vital half of a divine whole with the priesthood in bringing to pass the work of the Lord here on earth at this time.  Please plan to join us in our additional relief society meetings to learn and enjoy association with other sisters.

Sunday's lesson was the TFOT talk given by Yvonne Lucas, filling in for Peggy Campbell who was called out of town for a funeral.  The talk discussed was given by President Eyring at the Priesthood session last October and was entitled "Serve with the Spirit."  Although the talk was aimed at the priesthood, the truths it taught are equally applicable to all of us who seek to serve in any capacity.

President Eyring early on establishes that the Spirit is a necessary tool that will aid us in accomplishing whatever it is that the Lord will call on us to do.  We must qualify for the companionship of the Holy Ghost and for that we must guard carefully how we live our lives.  Spiritual gifts, which will greatly enhance our ability to serve, are cultivated by keeping the commandments.  That means we need to grow in faith in the Lord, Jesus Christ, and repent so that the

Atonement will be active in our life, cleansing us of those things that keep us from being in tune with the Spirit.

We must also be humble enough to be led by the Spirit, and prayer, sincere and heartfelt, is necessary to qualify for the Spirit.  Reading, studying and pondering the scriptures will strengthen our ability to serve, and require more than casual skimming of the scriptures.

Pondering, that is thinking and praying after reading scriptures,

invites revelation by the Spirit, that will help us to know how to teach and succor those we are sent to help.  Service with the Spirit as our guide will lift those around us and will be a sanctifying factor in our own progress toward gaining eternal life.  It will bring joy to others and peace and comfort to our own lives as we feel in tune with the Spirit and know where and how the Lord would have us use those gifts that He has given us.

Sharon Pringle shared with us ten ways that we grow and benefit from serving with the Spirit of the Lord as our guide.

Next Week: April 3-  General Conference

The following week, April 10,  will be Gospel Principles Chapter 30, "Charity."
