Sunday"s lesson was TFOT (teaching for our times for the uninitiated!) presented by Peggy Campbell, using a talk given by Elder Russell M. Nelson during the Priesthood Session of October Conference. "Be Thou an Example of the Believers" talked about the importance of both full time missionaries and member missionaries (which is all of us), being good examples of believers in Jesus Christ in all areas of our lives.
Full time missionaries, believers and devoted servants of the Lord, seek always to invite others to come unto Christ , helping them develop faith in the Lord and His Atonement, coming to understand and exercise the gift of repentance, being baptized and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost, and thereafter enduring to the end. We as member missionaries have a less daunting responsibility, for we are to find and friendship and love nonmembers and less actives to the place where they can accept and listen to the message of the restored gospel (as presented by the full time missionaries) with the prepared heart that will allow the Spirit to testify of its truthfulness.
We should seek to have "a pure heart and clean hands" and "the image of God engraven" upon our countenances, that our good works will be evident to others. We should be ready to explain why we live as we do, why we value what we value and turn from some aspects of the world, with a warm and joyful response. We may"be the very one to open the door to his or her salvation and understanding of the doctrine of Christ." We should strive to enlarge our circle of friends that we may touch the lives of those who are only kept from the truth because they know not where to find it.
We can help if we are truly examples "of the believers in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity." With these attributes as our goals for our own personal faith and righteousness, we will be strengthening our homes and families and serving those in need as we attract the notice of the pure in heart who are seeking the joy that only the gospel can bring.
