Today's Lesson was the TFOT presentation by Peggy Campbell, based on the talk given by President Uchtdorf at the last general conference, entitled "Of Things That Matter Most."
Peggy introduced the lesson with President Uchtdorf's admonition that when conditions are adverse, when things are stressful and disturbing it is best to slow down a little, to steady the course, so to speak, and focus on the basic, essential things that matter most. This is a theme that is valuable even when life is going on in its normal, often hectic pace. Focusing on things that matter most might force us to sometimes forgo good things in favor of better or best options, because it is impossible to do everything.
We need to evaluate and choose based on what helps us develop faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and strengthens our families. We live in an age filled with distractions at every turn. We must seek for the best things and when we do we are inevitably led to the foundational principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ. In these doctrines and principles lie the answers to the most complex questions of life. These principles and doctrines are simple enough for a child to grasp, yet they form the foundation of all that we are here on earth to accomplish.
Whatever our circumstances here in life we can focus on the significant and seek the help we need to determine what are the things that matter most. President Uchtdorf said that there are four key relationships that form the basis of all that matters most, here in mortality and into eternity: our relationship with our Heavenly Father, our relationship with our family members, our relationship with our fellow man and our relationship with ourselves. Sister Campbell invited three sisters to share their thoughts on what they felt mattered most in these areas.
Sister Schneider, Sister Sharp and Sister Lucas each gave moving testimony of what was really important in these relationships to them, each touching chords of empathy with the sisters in the room. We all need to look at our lives and determine that we will spend our time and energy and talents on what really matters most in an eternal sense and not let the frantic pace of modern life pull us from the firm foundation of light and truth in the basics of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Thus we will be paying heed to what matters most in a divine sense, even if it means simplifying our lives a little, that we might be better disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Next week VT Seminar: We are so looking forward to having all the sisters together!
Have a good week!
