The Sunday lesson was given by Shari Carnahan who was substituting for Traci Cline. The subject was the Gift of the Holy Ghost, which was perfect timing for we were blessed to witness the confirmations of two new ward members, Keri Jenkins, and her son Jonah during Sacrament meaning and the words and the spirit of the ordinances were fresh in everyone's mind.
Shari, with the ease of the professional she is, used technology to emphasize the major points of the lesson, and awed those of us who are less capable with the 21st century wonders. The Holy Ghost is "a personage of Spirit" and a member of the Godhead. Because of His mission to bear witness of the Father and the Son, and of all truth, His influence can be everywhere at once since He has no body of flesh and bones. He purifies, sanctifies, comforts and prepares us to be worthy to be in the presence of the Father.
The gift of the Holy Ghost, which Keri and Jonah were given today, is a privilege given to those who are worthy of the ordinance of baptism through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and repentance. It allows them to receive continual guidance and inspiration from the Holy Ghost as long as they remain worthy. Having the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost is dependent on worthiness and is the most valuable aid to remaining steadfast and faithful on the path to return to Heavenly Father. We must learn to recognize the influence of the Spirit in our lives and to trust it and respond to it in appropriate ways. It is usually a quiet, gentle feeling that will tell you what to do or what to say, or perhaps, as needed, a more strong note of caution or warning. Our testimony of the gospel, comes through the Holy Ghost, as does all revelation.
Jan Wright shared with us her first experiences with the Spirit as she investigated the Church many years ago and received the warm feeling of peace and truth as she read the Book of Mormon and other books about the Church. She did not, at the time, know how to explain the feelings she had, but now, since baptism and further study and association with the Church, she knows it was the Holy Ghost testifying to her of the truthfulness of what she was learning. Linda Marler shared how growing up in the Church gave many opportunities to learn how the Spirit works in our lives, and how she is now trying to teach her sons to recognize and respond to the whisperings of the Spirit.
Thank you Shari for a great lesson and all you sisters who shared insight and feelings about the great gift of the Spirit which has been given to bless and enrich and protect our lives.Next Week TFOT lesson given by Sister Campbell will be Elder Jeffrey R. Holland "Because of Your Faith."
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
