Sharon Pringle presented the lesson from the Gospel Principles book Chapter 15 The Lord's Covenant People. She began by reviewing the meaning of the word "covenant" in this context: a sacred agreement between God and a person or a group of people. Blessings are promised by God for obedience to particular commandments. Setting the terms of the covenants, God then reveals them through His prophets. Because we, as members of the Church of Jesus Christ have made covenants with the Lord at baptism, and renew those covenants each week as we partake of the sacrament, and have made further sacred covenants in the temple, we are among His covenant people. By taking the Lord"s name upon us and agreeing to always remember Him, and to keep
His commandments we can know that the Lord's Spirit will always be with us. We are promised exaltation for faithful obedience to the covenants we make in the temple. God has also made special covenants with particular persons, including Abraham. The Abrahamic covenant, made because of the extraordinary righteousness of this patriarch was given to Abraham and his righteous descendants. They would be entitled to receive the gospel, the blessings of the priesthood, and all the ordinances of exaltation, and would be charged with the responsibility of carrying the gospel to all nations. Through them all families of the earth would be blessed. We as baptized members of he Church are heirs to the Abrahamic covenant and are accounted as his seed which the Lord promised would be numberless. Our responsibilities are great because of this lineage, but the blessings are without measure. The fullness of the gospel, known as the new and everlasting covenant, is given to us at baptism and it is an opportunity, through obedience, to receive exaltation in the celestial kingdom. Where much is given, much is required, and the Lord expects us to serve and endure to the end in righteousness.
Next week Chapter 16 The Church of Jesus Christ in Former Times will be taught by two guest teachers while Traci Cline is enjoying a family vacation in Hawaii!
Have a great week and take the time to think about the blessings that have come to each of us as covenant people of the Lord through the lineage of Abraham.
