Sunday's lesson was from the Gospel Principles manual, Chapter 10, "The Scriptures" taught by Traci Cline. When the Lord's servants speak or write under the influence of the Holy Ghost, their words become scripture. As Latter-day Saints, we are richly blessed with four books of scripture known as the standard works of the church. We also accept the inspired words of our living prophets as scripture. This sets us apart from most other Christian churches. Traci began by referring to the origin of the Bible as the world sees it and as we as members of the restored Church know it actually came to be. The Lord has from the very beginning commanded that His dealings with man on earth be recorded in a book of remembrance, so that the teachings would be accessible to future generations. We see this in the Book of Mormon as records were commanded to be kept and guarded for those that came later, and the same commandments were given to the Lord's servants from Adam through the Apostles of the time of the early Christian church. The Bible is a collection of sacred writings covering many centuries of revelation from God to man, first preparing man for the coming of the Savior in the Old Testament and then setting forth the doctrines and teachings of the gospel which He brought to earth at the meridian of time. The Book of Mormon records God's dealings with man on the American continents, and sheds light on the doctrines of the gospel that had been altered or omitted from the sacred writings of the Bible through accident or purposeful alteration. That makes the Book of Mormon the most correct of any book and the very keystone of our religion according to the Prophet Joseph Smith. The Doctrine and Covenants is a collection of modern revelation given at the time of the restoration of the gospel and the bringing forth of the Book of Mormon, continuing down to this very generation with the recording of the giving of the priesthood to every worthy male member of the Church in 1978. The Pearl of Great Price contains two ancient writings, the Book of Moses and the Book of Abraham, one a revelation and the other the translation of an ancient papyrus, and also the writings of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Twice a year, at least, this canon of scripture is expanded as we receive the words of the living prophet, and those who have been set apart with him as prophets seers and revelators. The blessings we can receive as we study from this rich source of God's word, both ancient and modern, are endless and really everything we need to prepare us for whatever mortality will bring us, for it will prepare us to go to the Lord for whatever personal revelation and reassurance we need. A wonderful resource on the value of scripture in our lives can be found in the conference talk given by Elder D. Todd Christofferson in April conference entitled The Blessing of Scriptures.
We would like to thank our two teachers, Jennifer Walker and Nicole Hill, who have been called as Primary workers. We enjoyed and were edified by your lessons and you will be missed but our children will be blessed by the service you will now be giving them. We welcome Sharon Pringle and Peggy Campbell to the board as teachers and look forward to enjoying the lessons they will be sharing with us.
Next week Sharon Pringle will be teaching Chapter 11, The Life of Christ.
Haves a great week!
