Sunday Update

Dear Sisters,

Because of ward conference we met in third hour in an adult session.

During the adult hour Bishop Peterson spoke on obtaining patterns of personal righteousness. Knowing and doing are both essential elements in the pattern, for while Satan knows, he fails to do what is righteous.Actions create our eternal destiny, and it is faith that motivates our actions, hope gives rise to faith and hope comes from a sincere desire for that which is good. This desire is nurtured when we surround ourselves with spiritual strength through our associations with good people, time spent in the scriptures and words of God's servants past and present and, in general, an uplifting and wholesome environment. It is our agency that chooses our associations and we need to eliminate anything that leads us away from purity and cleanliness. That way the Spirit can help us use our agency wisely.

Pres. Rosie Johnson of the Stake R.S. spoke of patterns in the scriptures that emphasized preparedness. In the OT the people were to prepare their hearts for the Savior, in the NT the people were to look to the Lord and prepare by coming unto Him. The Book of Mormon emphasized the eternal atonement and how to prepare to be worthy to partake of it, and the D&C teaches us to prepare for what is to come so that we might not need to fear. If we are temporally as prepared as we can be when those things do come that might be hard, we will be able to better concern ourselves with spiritual things not just our immediate survival.

Pres. Millard spoke of the fact that Heavenly Father's plan is a plan for success with nearly all of his children receiving some degree of glory. While in mortality we can choose to be happy no matter what our physical circumstances might be. If we can rise beyond the temporal desires of a material world we will be able to better meet the inevitable adversity that serves to refine us and help us better understand the atonement. He referred to the words of Elder Hales in his conference talk on being a Provident Provider.

Have a good week,

The Relief Society Presidency
